Gimp's ear(s): Musical Recommendations

Dusty Cops 2 is unleashed! Over 4 years after the first compilation comes the sequel. So get yer shooters ready and prepare for gang warfare! More HERE.

A great deal of Vinyl is now being reproduced, pressed on 'deluxe' heavy duty vinyl and being sold at 'deluxe' (read: extortionate) prices. It's fair to say that most of the albums being re-issued are shite... Soundtracks that hover around mediocre and have long been available on CD at a third of the price. A great amount of these are now being pooped out at will. Vinyl is cool again, and many labels are reissuing any old soundtrack to make a quick buck. But wait! Amongst the piles of shite are some gems! Yes, real, actual musical pearls that actually do fully deserve a re-release. Wow.

One of the recent pearls is KILL! A fantastic soundtrack to the 1971 curio, composed by Bert Pisano & Jacques Chaumont. It's dramatic, sleazy, trippy (well, sitar and lady-moaning) and sexy, a very eclectic soundtrack indeed. KILL! Is very much recommended above most of the other crap being reissued, and really deserves multiple listeningsingsings. Ings.

One of John Barry's bestest soundtracks is the moody, dramatic jazz music he composed for the 1965 classic The Ipcress file. I like to listen to this one a lot when traveling, or drifting around the seedy arteries of Prague late at night.

Another similarly work by Barry is his accompaniment to The Quiller Memorandum. Although made around the same time as Ipcress, there's a more generally appealing sound to Quiller... A toned down Ipcress mixed with elements of Barry's Bond compositions. Ipcress is definitely the better of the two, in terms of both soundtrack and movie, but both are splendid pieces of work.

Another recent re-ish worth some pennies/cents*(delete as appropriate) is Cinedelic's Metralleta Stein, a film I've not actually seen, but, judging by the cover (no, never do that) I'm sold! It's John Saxon with a gun! Groovy! This plays like a library record, and is er- eclectic to say the least. Boy howdy, when it's funky, it's FUNKY. Now I feel like listening to Dusty Cops.
