THAT HIP, NOW SOUND...

Well, yes indeed, this is jolly exciting. Just look at that lovely lady enjoying stereophonic sound. It's the future, don't you know? Oh yes it i- well, maybe not. But back in the days of not so very long ago, STEREO was all the rage. Many, many records were released to tell the world what stereophonic sound was all about... Read a little bit about it here.

Oh, but what happened to all that two speaker jazz? When did it get so complicated? These days we're told that a mere two speakers is simply not enough! Well, that depends on what you really want, as opposed to what you think you need*. We're living in the era of surround sound, and if you find it all confusing, fear not! As team worldwidegimp have produced an all expense spared educational diagram below to help you with the all-new, not particularly improved surround sound set-up. You'll notice that Fred Feast is in the optimum listening position, with sadly no space left for Hollands pies or cans of Newton & Ridley ale.

As Fred Feast helps us realise the current 9.2 surround sound set-up (the wife's still not happy), it's clear we are now far from the stereophonic set-up of the 1960s. Well, it's 11 speakers instead of 2! Yes, it's all gone out of hand, hasn't it? Expect a future containing (gulp) 11.4. That is 15 speakers, four of which will be subwoofers. I'm assuming this will be for people with no life, no wife, and certainly no neighbours. Here's the list of what is used in Fred's Feast of speakers diagram:

R = RIGHT
C = CENTRE

LS = LEFT SIDE SURROUND
RS = RIGHT SIDE SURROUND

LB = LEFT BACK SURROUND
RB = RIGHT BACK SURROUND

LH = LEFT HEIGHT (ELEVATED)
RH = RIGHT HEIGHT (ELEVATED)

SUBL = SUBWOOFER LEFT
SUBR = SUBWOOFER RIGHT
