Spring 2010. Amsterdam.
As Spring is in the air, and Summer finally cometh, it can only be time for a French compilation. Oh! Hé! Hein! Bon! as Nino Ferrer once sang. This time the cover honours go to Jane Birkin, who was Gainsbourg's muse suring the peak of his magical French powers. A few of the track on here are lifted from their classic collaberations on Je T'aime... Moi Non Plus & Melody Nelson. Two remarkable albums, indeed.
But the first half of Volume 3 is more yé yé & novelty 'psychorama' pop. Marianne Faithfull's lovely Hier Ou Demain gets included, which is from the soundtrack to Anna, one of my faves, that one. The ever-lovely Anna Karina goes a bit crazy on Mic et Mac, which is from Godard's Pierrot Le Fou soundtrack. Nice. There's the obligatory Francoise Hardy track (love her), and cheeky Daniel Beretta has a couple of songs included. One about Hashish, and a crooning track Un Amico which is from a film that starred both Beretta & Oliver Reed! Beretta popped up looking like he just fell out of Joseph & his amazing technicolour dreamcoat, which, with a voice like that, may very well be the case. Interesting fact: Daniel Beretta was the official French voice-artist for all Arnold Schwarzenegger movies released in France! Bon.
And finally... Mireille Mathieu sings us out, with a voice so powerful, that it could halt a plane in mid-air. L'eblouissante Lumiere is produced by Ennio Morricone, and Mathieu's voice is amazing on this track. But could that really ever justify her doing this?? No.
