The dirty beats of J Saul Kane (Depth Charge)

So, around 1992, most of us who were alive and free were listening to Depth Charge. Those meaty, sleazy beats really hit hard, as did the drugs we were taking at the time, which perfectly complimented those bass-heavy low-end beats.

Kane began releasing 12" singles back in 1989, but his debut LP '9 deadly venoms' in 1994 was the LP that got us all hooked. Mixing beats with samples from Hong Kong martial arts films, video nasty horror movies and -yes! genuine 1970s classics was indeed an original way of making music. Lots of 12" singles followed, but it took some years (5 actually) for Kane to release 2 more albums... Back-to-back no less!. I suppose, with co-owning a record label, and producing music under many other monikers, Kane must've put Depth Charge on the back seat somewhat.

It matters not! In 2009 I made a compilation of my favourite tracks of his, and in 2019 began compiling more rare B-sides and forgotten gems from his early days. (How the fuck did I miss Depth Charge versus Silver Fox???)

And so, here they both are... The first one 'Shaolin Monkey Death-Hop' is more intense, but the newer one, 'Lone Wolf & Dub' is more laid-back. The quality may be a bit dodgy at times...But that's the way you like isn't it, you sluts!
