JUNE 2014: The Lofthellir Ice Cave is in the Mývatn area of Northern Iceland, and is a treat! Even in June, the ice formations are intact, in a near constant temperature of 0 (Zero) Degrees Celsius. I'd say it was about 13/14º C outside at the time, so the contrast between the two temperatures was most welcome. As well as all the usual warnings associated with this kind of activity (good boots, waterproofs etc...), the organisers have missed a big one: You need a strong stomach for the off-road journey to and from the location of the cave. As it stands, no other company has access to this particular cave, so this is the only way to get there. Those with a light stomach be warned!

As you can see, some of the ice formations are rather lovely. ABOVE: Check out the ice formation near the top of this ice phallus! LEFT: A good example of the volcanic lava rock to found in the area surrounding the cave (above ground, obviously).
